Homeopathy is an excellent system of medicine for pets it is safe gentle, non invasive, holistic and a comprehensive system of medicine. It can treat your pet’s disease on all levels, not just the symptoms by stimulating your pets own healing mechanisms. Homeopathy uses natural remedies which are safe, non-toxic, non–addictive, free from side effects and does not interfere with other medical treatments. It is easy to administer. The remedies can be bought from any health food shop or homeopathic pharmacy.
What is homeopathy? For those of you who know nothing about it as a system of medicine one of its basic principals is ‘Like Cures Like’. i.e. that a substance that can cause symptoms of illness in a health man or an animal can also be used in the treatment of any condition similar symptoms in a sick man or animal. Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy believed that approaches to disease must be studied from the viewpoint of 'Vitality', (the life and health of an individual or animal.) and not from the study of disease and the suppression of symptoms.
He perceived disease to be on an energetic plane so the remedy for cure must be on this plane too. The art of a homeopathy is to understand what caused the vital energy to produce the symptoms your pet is presenting with, then to find the remedy which produces similar disturbances in the vital energy of a health individual so that the vital energy can be stimulated to heal itself.
The remedies act as a catalyst to stimulate this process of self healing and as such can only work when the indicated remedy is properly matched to what is going on with your pet and the symptoms it is producing. It is safe in the sense that if you don’t get a proper match nothing happens.
The Symptom pictures are listed in different Materia Medicas and there are many different ones available on the market. A Repertory is where individual symptoms can be looked up, individually cross referenced with other symptoms to find the most similar remedy to the symptoms your pet is presenting with.
It is used in the same way you look up words in the dictionary. An excellent materia medica and repertory for pet owners is ‘A Veterinary Materia Medica and Clinical Repertory’ by George Macleod. Mental symptoms are extremely important in the treatment of a human patient by a homeopath but observation of an animal’s behaviour and how it reacts to any given situation to other animals or people to noise etc will in some way compensate for the lack of communication by speech.
In some circumstances it is almost possible to imagine how your pet is feeling, from emotional upsets like death of a companion, separation from the owner by quarantine etc…Fortunately there are many remedies in the Materia Medica that deal with such traumatic events in your pets life. The remedies are marketed as medicated tablets, powders or tinctures or water dilution.
Pet owners must determine which form of remedy best suits their pet. They can be sprinkled on their food, and liquids can be added to water. (It is important not to unduly stress your pet by trying to give a remedy). NB: It is legal to treat your own pets with homeopathic medicines but it is not legal to treat other animals unless you are a qualified vet. Many vets now use homeopathy so it is worth asking around to find a local one.
