Your Colleagues Need You: Veterinary Homeopathy Under Threat A slippery slope for our profession!
The latest threat to homeopathy targets animals
In November 2017, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) issued a ‘position’ statement on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), which effectively bans the use of homeopathy as a first choice option by vets.
Although the statement refers to all CAM, homeopathy is singled out:
“Homeopathy exists without a recognised body of evidence for its use. Furthermore, it is not based on sound scientific principles. In order to protect animal welfare, we regard such treatments as being complementary rather than alternative to treatments for which there is a recognised evidence base or which are based in sound scientific principles.
It is vital, to protect the welfare of animals committed to the care of the veterinary profession and the public’s confidence in the profession, that any treatments not underpinned by a recognised evidence base or sound scientific principles do not delay or replace those that do.”
Anti CAM petition and RCVS review of CAM
There are approximately 50 Faculty trained homeopathic vets in the UK, all belonging to British Association of Homeopathic Veterinary Surgeons (BAHVS). Until recently, the RCVS was happy to support the judgement of homeopathic vets, as much as any other of its members, with regard to treatment choice, particularly since homeopathy is protected in EU and UK law.
However, as a consequence of a petition in 2016, orchestrated by a known vet-sceptic and his subsequent appointment to the RCVS committee, the RCVS began a review of CAM. Alarmingly, the resulting statement was issued without due diligence. In particular, BAHVS was not once consulted in this crucial process despite asking for representation.
What does it mean for homeopathy in the UK generally?
Evidence has come to light that veterinary homeopathy has been specifically identified as an ‘easy target’. Various sceptic organisations are working to ensure that homeopathy as a profession will be eventually be ‘outlawed’ – these are the same people who have orchestrated the closure of our homeopathic hospitals, restricted access to homeopathy on the NHS (a battle still being fought at the moment), and who have subjected homeopaths’ websites to the scrutiny of the Advertising Standards Authority.
THE INTENT IS CLEAR: If UK vets are unable to practise homeopathy, their angle will be ‘Animals are better protected against ineffective pseudo-science than our children’. (An actual quote.) In other words, they will use the demise of veterinary homeopathy as leverage to target our profession further.
The RCVS were very clever and took legal advice on how far they could push a ban. This seems to be a prelude to an outright ban once the UK is free of European constraints post Brexit, i.e.they will not stop until homeopathy is made illegal.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
The RCVS statement is another blow for homeopathy, BUT it has generated an unprecedented amount of support from other CAM practitioners, BAHVS clients and the general public, many of whom have experienced excellent results from the use of CAM for themselves and/or their animals.
A petition asking for the statement to be retracted raised 15,000 signatures and was presented to the RCVS by a delegation of 50+ homeopathy supporters which included vets, clients and homeopaths on January 15th. This petition has now exceeded 17,000 signatures BUT there are 6 MILLION users of homeopathy in the UK and we need to reach them - we are DETERMINED to achieve 100,000 signatures and we need your help!
An incredibly well organised ‘CAMpaign’ has begun to save homeopathy for animals and protect freedom of choice in veterinary medicine. The aim is to inform and unite the general public and other CAM professionals to see off these attacks, now and in the future. This level of support has never been seen before so PLEASE get behind it!
