How well does your Homeopathic practitioner follow the Principles of Healing?
When a homeopath studies a Homeopathy course they learn about the Principles of Healing? A heated debate about what is homeopathy recently led me to reconsider what we mean by principles. By definition a Principle (noun) is a:
a fundamental truth or proposition serving as the foundation for belief or action
a fundamental source or basis of something
a fundamental truth, law, doctrine, or motivating force upon which others are based.

Steven Covey talks about principles as lighthouses. They are fixed points that are there to guide us. They do not change. They relate to our morals, our values and to those things that are most important – our highest purposes.
In order to achieve those things which are most important to us we have to do things in ways that are congruent and supported by our principles. If we go against our principles, it is inevitable that our highest purposes will not be supported and with the best of intentions we will achieve something other than what was sought.

We need our principles in order to see ahead and to guide us on the road ahead so that the ‘what’s’ and ‘how’s’, the things we need to do, will take us to our desired goal. It helps if we make the following distinction between Principles, Rules and Techniques. study homeopathy online
Principles are totally immovable, timeless, ageless, inviolable and will always act whether we like it or not. They are expressions of fundamental laws of nature and are also very simple in their concept.
Rules are powerful but not as powerful as Principles; they can be compared with scientific theories which may change and develop with time. The longer they stand the test of time and the more simply they may be expressed, the closer they come to being Principles. The Rules can be seen as the next layer down from Principals and they can often be seen to rest on underlying Principles which can be expressed more simply. Often Rules get quite technical when they are expressed.
Techniques can change, be modified, be applied to different Principals and used in many different ways without necessarily giving rise to ill consequences etc. They generally contain a lot of detail.

In studying homeopathy we learn what are the Principles of Healing.
They can be expressed as: study homeopathy online
1) The Principle of Intelligent Unity/Totality or more simply ‘The whole functions intelligently’.
Everything is inter-related and interconnected, functioning as a whole for the intelligent benefit of the whole. This Principal recognises the inter-connectedness and underlying unity of everything – from the parts and systems of the individual, to the individual, the individual within their immediate environment, within their culture, their nation, the world and ultimately with everything. It also recognises the intelligent arrangements and inter-relationships within that Unity. homeopathy courses online
Clearly the further down this road towards Unity (or Totality) that one progresses, the more one is referring to a spiritual journey and at some point the effectiveness of any individual therapy along this road may, or may not, cease. This does not negate the Principle though, only how it may be usefully applied within the therapy.
According to the Principle of Intelligent Unity/Totality, cure will progress intelligently and most commonly in the manner described by the Rule of Cure (Law of Cure) which is an expression of this Principle.
Other expressions of this Principle at work help us to see how the parts fit together in an intelligent whole which can help indicate how best to re-integrate fragmented / cut off / blocked etc areas, back into the underlying Unity/Totality.
2) The Principal of Minima which may be expressed as Give/do the minimum necessary to elicit an appropriate healing response. (This Principle also gives rise to a corollary which is expressed in the Hippocratic Oath as – First, do no harm).
3) The Law of Similars - May be expressed as ‘Like cures like’. The ‘Law of Similars’ is not unique to homeopathy (it is demonstrated by Allopathy in clinical trials) but noticed by Hahnemann and linked to homeopathy as a healing principle.
NB: If there is any coherent philosophy underlying modern allopathic medicine it would be based on the Law of Opposites and two theories about the causes and cures of disease (the Germ theory and the Chemical Imbalance Theory. (This can be further clarified in later articles).
In studying homeopathy we learn the rules that follow from the Principles of Healing
a) From the Principle of Intelligent Unity/Totality
The Law of Cure is a Rule. (Many homeopathic practitioners have the experience of individual cases in which cure does not always proceed according to the Law of Cure. Some people do get better without following or actually do the opposite of some of the directions given its several facets). If we remember that Principles are immutable, constant and always act then there can be no exceptions, therefore it is not a Principle. It is better considered as an expression of the way the whole system works intelligently for the benefit of the whole in each every unique individual. Although Hahnemann had the original idea about a Law of Cure, it was Constantine Herring who developed the concept and proposed a useful set of guideline for homeopathic practitioners. They are that:
Cures proceed from above downward
From within outward
From the most important organ to the least important organ
In reverse order to the appearance of the symptoms (This is one of the most consistent observable signs of healing in homeopathy in relationship to the patient’s time line but it is also observable when using acupuncture, chi kung, reflexology nutrition, herbs etc).
A 'return of old symptoms' As the patient is improving you can expect to see a 'return of old symptoms' and will need to reassure them (and yourself) that this is ok and part of the healing process. This is another observable sign of healing which other CAM practitioners also observe
b) Rules that follow from the Principle of Minima:
The Rule of Minima –this will lead to rules (and myths) about the quantity of substance or other intervention needed to elicit an appropriate healing response.
Techniques that follow from the Principle of Healing
CAM ( complementary and alternative medicine ) Practitioners have developed and are continuing to develop a range of techniques to support individuals in healing themselves. However there are common baselines that affect all of these practices and I suggest that all practitioners, regardless of the techniques they practice should have the following: study homeopathy online
A clear understanding of Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology - A decent working knowledge of AP &P will give you a greater insight into the impact of the mind/emotions on the physical body, diet and other methods of applying homeopathy.
Knowledge of Other Energy Paradigms - There are three main energy models which have developed in different cultures over the course of their histories that provide useful insights for all healers. The common theme is they are all based on ‘observation by astute healers’ over many centuries (an unrivalled grounding in empirical science). Each of these consists of a complete body of knowledge, with its own paradigms and parameters. They are:
The Meridian System.
The Chakra system.
The Human Energy or Auric Field. homeopathy courses online
Good powers of Observation – Healers must become good observers and astute evaluators of all that is going on with the patient. A wider understanding of healing paradigms and a good basic knowledge of A & P and Pathology from an allopathic perspective will aid you in being able to make links between the mind and body, and to view symptoms presented in a deeper and wider context.
A recognition of the importance of nutrition and life style changes necessary for healing and sustained good health.
A recognition that Healers can only support the healing process – it is the individual who ultimately cures themselves. study homeopathy online
It is important for homeopathic practitioners to understand both the underlying principles of healing and of their particular practice, and then to be able use the rules and techniques appropriately. Practical application of these should produce the required result of the patient supported in their healing process . homeopathy courses online
Certainly within homeopathy much of the debate between different schools of thought arises from losing sight of the Principles of Healing and this has degenerated into arguments about Rule/techniques which is divisive and ultimately self defeating.
It is also clear that Allopathy (so called scientific medicine) lacks any insight or philosophy of the principals of healing nor does it acknowledge the inter connectedness of mind, body and spirit. We need to acknowledge what works in allopathy (particularly acute surgery and some very selective use of drugs but expose the underlying flaws around a lack of a philosophy of healing which has led to the profit and control based ideologies over our health which do not have any genuine ‘scientific’ basis. In order to counteract the misinformation CAM ( complementary and alternative medicine ) practitioner need to be much clearer about what the principles of healing and where their particular approach fits within that paradigm.
Demonstrating the links between all CAM ( complementary and alternative medicine ) systems of healing is crucial if we are to survive the assaults against it by the prevailing ‘religion of scientism). The common key issues to remember are:

The terms ‘Prana’, ‘Vital force’, ‘Qi’, ‘chi’ etc are not 'new age' concepts or unique to homeopathy but have a very long history in patient care and in CAM medical theories. This 'history' has been suppressed to a great extent by the rise of 'allopathic' so called ‘scientific’ medicine in the relatively recent two centuries.
CAM ( complementary and alternative medicine ) practices should take an essentially eclectic approach to health. They:
work on an energetic level by supporting 'the vital force'
follow a philosophy of minimal intervention
can be combined in a holistic approach with nutrition, herbal treatment and other non invasive therapies
should be safe, non toxic and sustainable
empower the individual to take back control over their own health
recognise the interconnectedness of all things
